  • About us

Noth Kent WDM group is a combination of members from previous Medway and Gravesend groups. It has the distinction of being the only WDM group in Kent - hopefully other groups will be formed one day. We have about 10 members, of whom 6 attend meetings. We keep in touch by email, mostly. We try to keep active in our area, taking advantage of opportunities such as the Dickens Festivals in Rochester, and the annual Climate Change conference in Thanet. We built up good relationships with our previous (Labour MPs) and are trying to make contact with the new (Conservative) ones. The group covers at least 5 constituencies. WDM received a lot of publicvity locally when the opposition to the Eon Coal-fired power station at Hoo was at its peak. However, now that the plans for that have finally been scrapped, no new members have stuck with the local group, which is a pity. Having said that, the opposition to the power station and the proposed airport at Cliffe (now back on the agenda, apparently) shows that there is potential for activism and civil society in this area. The challenge is to broaden horizons beyond local issues. Though we are small in number, we are in good heart. We try to support WDM events in London: marches, conferences, events, and lobbies of parliament, so we gain encouragement from the enthusiasm and success of others. We would welcome more members. Especially we lack expertise in contacting the media, working on the website, and thinking up newsworthy stunts!
