Meetings with local MEPs to highlight dangers of food speculation

Leicester, Derby and Nottingham WDM groups met with local MEPs to discuss important legislation that is going through the European Parliament.

The MiFiD (Markets in Financial Instruments Directive) is currently being reviewed in Brussels. We met to discuss this legislation with Glenis Willmott MEP on 2nd December 2011 and Bill Newton Dunn MEP on 21st Jan 2012. Both meetings were very positive and highlighted the value of taking our message to Europe.

Big changes in world food prices can be caused by speculation in commodity markets. This involves the buying and selling of future food crops, which can produce sudden increases in prices of basic foods. This can have a devastating impact on people in developing countries.
