Hello,
The East Dorset WDM group will be holding a stall at Tolpuddle again this year. Please look out for us in the main tent, and please come and sign some action cards if you have a few minutes spare. (we’ll probably ask you when you get within 5 metres anyway!)
Tolpuddle is taking place from the 16th to the 17th of July, and will feature stalls, displays, crafts and materials and a vast array of NGOs and local groups. Please try your best to attend, as it’s a fantastic and moral boosting event.
Further information, including a full listing of stalls, music, and other events, can be found on the offical Tolpuddle Festival website: http://www.tolpuddlemartyrs.org.uk/index.php?page=2010-festival
We look forward to seeing as many WDM supporters as possible.

With three members present we were able to get over 240 signatures of support, and pass on literature to help raise the issues to a wider audience.

Monday 18th – Friday 22nd October 2010
Cherry Tree Nursery, off New Rd roundabout, Northbourne, Bournemouth. BH10 7DA
Below is a list of presentations and stalls:
Monday 18th
1:30
Condo Chejwaya Water project
QBL who are helping the poorest communities in Bolivia, the poorest country in South America will discuss this project that Cherry Tree newly supports.
With first hand accounts and pictures, the discussion looks at projects for getting fresh water to communities in the Andes and on the Altiplano, especially those that Cherry Trees has supported. Condo Chejwaya is a very remote highland community of Aymara people. The water has to be piped a considerable distance crossing ravines and valleys (8 km?). Cherry Tree have already raised more than half of the very substantial costs involved. Time permitting some of the agricultural projects that QBL support, including llamas, trout farming and greenhouses will be covered.
Tuesday 19th
11:00
Green Gardening
Discussion will include value of compost making and recycling including use scrap items in the garden, i.e. old tyres, carpets, and metal grids.
Using coppiced wood as supports i.e. hazel.
Creating habitats for wildlife working with nature – chemical free.
Propagating your own plants, swapping plants seeds and cuttings, right place right plant therefore reducing watering, use of succulents in containers, collecting water, grey water, not cutting the lawn too much, being efficient thus not wasting energy. (linking to permaculture principles of design)
1:30
Film presented by East Dorset WDM
‘Dirty Oil’
A behind-the-scenes documentary that takes a look into the strip-mined world of Alberta, Canada where the vast and toxic Tar Sands deposit supplies the U.S. with the majority of its oil.
(US gas consumption currently uses the same amount as the next 20 top countries combined)
We are introduced to an Aboriginal community in Alberta who are being affected by the strip mining happening up the river from where they live. The government are denying they are affected in any way but research from independent bodies is proving otherwise as can be seen in the documentary. It’s interesting that words like ‘asthma’ or ‘cancer’ didn’t exist in their language until the huge oil refineries moved in.

Wednesday 20th
11:00
Eco build
A discussion about sustainable building techniques, focusing on the Cherry Tree new build project
1:30
CAAT Campaign Against the Arms Trade
The speaker will talk on Britain’s role in the industry, which is responsible for countless deaths worldwide.
She will show how the trade – deeply mired in corruption – is not even good for the economy but actually costs the British taxpayer money.
Thursday 21st
11:00
Alaska Wind Farm
Is a wind farm project, planned for a quarry nr Wareham in Purbeck, Dorset, consisting of 4 large wind turbines having the capacity to power just over 5,000 homes every year, if constructed. It’s called Alaska, after Alaska Environmental Contracting, which is the landowner’s business. This November, Purbeck District Council will make a decision on the future of this project. It would be Dorset’s first wind farm and an important contribution to renewable energy in the UK.

1:30
This Award winning Documentary presented by Cherry Tree Nursery.
‘Under Rich Earth’
Is a story about ordinary people with extraordinary courage. In a remote mountain valley in Ecuador, coffee and sugarcane farmers face the dismal prospect of being forced off their land to make way for a mining project. Unprotected by the police and ignored by their government, they prepare to face down the invaders alone. Their resistance ultimately leads to a remarkable and dangerous stand off between farmers and a band of armed paramilitaries deep in the Cloud forest. In a world dominated by news of massacres and terrorism, this is a surprising and poignant tale of hope and determination.

Friday 22nd
11:00
Permaculture
Discussion explains how three key aspects:
1. an ethical framework
2. understandings of how nature works, and
3. a design approach
are combined to support the creation of sustainable agriculturally productive, non-polluting and healthy settlements. This means in some cases adapting our existing settlements. In other it can mean starting from scratch. Both offer interesting challenges and opportunities.
With the aim of sustaining human activities for many generations to come, in harmony with nature with thriving communities in self-reliant regions, biodiverse agriculture and social justice, peace and abundance
