Barclays targeted for ‘betting on hunger’

On Saturday 28 May, WDM supporters in Reading targeted a local Barclays bank calling on it to ‘stop betting on hunger’. This was part of WDM’s campaign to regulate food speculation. Barclays Capital is the UK’s biggest player in food speculation and helps other financial players bet on hunger too. The bank’s role in food speculation is driving up global food prices and leaving millions facing hunger and malnutrition.

WDM supporters hold a banner outside Barclays in Reading saying 'stop Barclays betting on hunger' with someone dressed as a Barclays eagle banker.

The action involved someone dressed as a Barclays eagle banker, whilst others held a banner and leafleted on the street outside the bank. A few campaigners handed out spoof business cards and engaged with customers inside the bank, and we even spoke to the branch manager and delivered WDM’s food speculation materials which explain the campaign. It was a successful action that followed a morning of action-planning workshops and talks about WDM’s food campaign and the wider issue of food speculation.

You can find more photos of the action on WDM’s flickr page here.
